
Active time seems like it should be obvious: the time you spent being active. Then you finish a long ride, or a day walking at your desk, check your watch, and it shows a fraction of the hours you were moving. That gap is worth understanding.
Quick answer: Active time is the time your body spends in elevated activity, estimated by Garmin from movement and intensity, not a plain stopwatch. Because it leans on wrist motion, activities that keep your hands relatively still, cycling and walking-pad desk work above all, can log far less active time than you did. Logging the session does not reliably fix it, so read active time as a rough gauge rather than a full account of your day.
What it is meant to capture
Active time is not every minute you are technically moving. It is the time you spend working, the walking, climbing, and effort that raises your body above a resting baseline. That is a more useful idea than raw elapsed time, because standing in the kitchen is not the same as a brisk walk.
Why hard activity can show almost nothing
Here is the quirk that catches people out. Garmin’s day-to-day activity detection leans heavily on the accelerometer in your watch, which reads the motion of your wrist. Some real activity breaks that assumption. On a bike your hands sit locked on the bars, so your wrist barely moves even while your legs are working hard, and a seven-hour ride can show up as a couple of hours of active time. The same thing happens at a walking pad or treadmill desk: you can walk for hours, but if your wrist is resting on a keyboard or mouse, the watch sees stillness and counts little of it.
The frustrating part is that logging the session does not reliably fix it. Even when you record a ride or a walk as an activity, Garmin often does not credit it toward your daily active time, because that figure is driven by wrist movement rather than the workout you saved. So the undercount can persist even for effort your watch clearly recorded.
How to read it
Treat active time as a rough gauge of how much of your day involved movement your wrist could feel, not a full account of how active you were. On days built around cycling or walking-pad work, expect it to read low, and lean on other signals for the real picture.
