Heart rate variability explained

Your HRV number swings from night to night, and on its own it can look like noise. Once you know what it measures, the swings start to mean something.

Quick answer: Heart rate variability is the tiny variation in time between your heartbeats. More variation generally means your nervous system is relaxed and recovered; less means it is under load from training, stress, poor sleep, or illness. The number is highly personal, so the useful read is your own trend, not a comparison to anyone else.

What HRV is

Your heart does not beat like a metronome. Even at a steady resting rate, the gap between beats varies slightly, a few milliseconds here and there. That variation is HRV.

It reflects your autonomic nervous system, the balance between the “fight or flight” side and the “rest and digest” side. When you are recovered, the rest-and-digest side is active and your beat-to-beat timing varies more. When you are stressed, sick, or worn down, your body tightens that timing up, and HRV falls.

How Garmin measures it

Garmin reads HRV overnight, from the beat-to-beat timing of your heart while you sleep. That timing is what it turns into your HRV number.

This is worth knowing because it explains a common surprise: your overnight Garmin HRV can look nothing like a quick reading you take sitting on the couch. Daytime spot checks bounce around with your posture, breathing, and what you just did. The overnight window is measured when your body is at its most settled, which is why it is the version recovery scores rely on.

Why comparing your number to someone else’s is pointless

HRV is one of the most individual metrics there is. Genetics, age, and baseline fitness mean one person can sit at 40 and another at 100, both perfectly healthy. Chasing a friend’s number, or a “good HRV” chart, misses the point.

What carries the signal is your own baseline and how today compares to it. A stable or slowly rising trend is a good sign. A sharp drop from your normal is the flag.

What makes it swing

A few things reliably move HRV down:

  • A hard or long workout the day before
  • Short or poor-quality sleep
  • Alcohol, which suppresses HRV for the night
  • Illness, often before you feel symptoms
  • High life stress

One low morning is usually just noise. A low reading that holds for several days is your body telling you it is carrying more load than it is clearing.
